Run For The Roses

KENTUCKY DERBY
Well I, Sweet William The Scot, am ready for the Kentucky Derby. Got my fanciful straw bowler hat, got my own roses and now I am going to mix up my Mint Julep, The Very Dream of Drinks, so I can imbibe the spirits. WooHoo!!!!!!
The mint julep has been promoted by Churchill Downs in association with the Kentucky Derby since 1938. Each year almost 120,000 juleps are served at Churchill Downs over the two day period of the Kentucky Oaks and the Kentucky Derby, virtually all of them in specially made Kentucky Derby collectible glasses.
Since 2006, Churchill Downs has also served extra-premium custom-made mint juleps at a cost of $1000 each at the Kentucky Derby. These mint juleps are served in gold-plated cups with silver straws, and were made from Woodford Reserve bourbon, mint imported from Ireland, spring water ice cubes from the Bavarian Alps, and sugar from Australia. The proceeds are used to support charitable causes dedicated to retired race horses. In May 2008, Churchill Downs unveiled the world's largest mint julep glass. It has a capacity of 206 US gallons.
INGREDIENTS
  • 3 sprigs fresh mint
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • 1 teaspoon superfine sugar
  • 2 ounces bourbon
  • INSTRUCTIONS
Muddle 2 mint sprigs, the water, and the sugar in a silver julep cup.
Fill the glass with crushed ice, and pour in the bourbon.
Garnish with the remaining mint sprig.

Who is your favorite to win the Kentucky Derby?

    A toast to the winner.
Oh No What Have I Done, HANGOVER ~ unpleasant physiological effects following heavy consumption of alcoholic beverages.
    Thanks for being a friend
traveling down the road and back again
Your heart is true and your a friend of mine.
    Signing Off

    1. I can't decide how I am going to imbibe this weekend - with a mint julep or with a pina colada for Cinco de Mayo. The decisions we face! I love you hat!

    16. You're asking US who's gonna win? We thought YOU were gonna tell us. You're a lot closer than I am so right on down to the Downs and ask the horses and report back (before race time, of course).

    17. Hello Sweet William! To start, please tell your mom THANK-YOU THANK-YOU THANK-YOU for the suggestion from Lynn at Rocky Creek Scottie's of using Vicks on Lucas's nose. I contacted her, (remember that our boy Todd is a Rocky Creek Scottie) and she highly recommended it, and it really helped!!

Second, you know, I'm originally from around Louisville and when I was in high school I marched in the Derby Parade--The whole event is one of my favorites!! I especially love the stories of the horses etc., But I don't have a favorite to win the race yet, however I see that 'Union Rags' is the early favorite...

    35. Our dogs got to enjoy in some of the Derby festivities too! The marathon went right past our place so Brodie and Caolin got to watch the runners. On Derby day Brodie choose Bodemeister to win since the name is so similar to her own-- she was disapointed that he didn't win.
