Cormorant Fisherman

It's a good day for hanging around!  Does your city have a sister city?
Well in my city, Cincinnati, Ohio, we have seven sister cities.
One of the sister cities is Gifu, Japan
It became a Sister City: May 11, 1988
Population: 413,099
Land Area: 203 miles2
Distance from Fountain Square the center of my city: 6659 miles
Don't think I will be traveling there soon.
Gifu City is located in central Japan on the island of Honshu.  Gifu City is most famous for its 1300-year-old cormorant fishing tradition, which uses the birds to catch fish attracting thousands of tourists each year.
The fishermen tie a snare near the base of the bird's throat. This prevents the birds from swallowing larger fish, which are held in their throat, but the birds can swallow smaller fish. When a cormorant has caught a fish in its throat, the fisherman brings the bird back to the boat and has the bird spit the fish up.  YUCK!!
This picture was taken last Fall.
They gave my city this statue of friendship in 1992.
If you visit the Twin Lakes in Eden Park, you will discover the statue of a cormorant fisherman adjacent to beautiful flowering cherry trees.
The plaque is written in braille also.
Why I have little statues and plaques all over my city.

Thanks for being a friend

  1. We have a sister city, too, but we can't think of the name of it at the moment. They came and made a beautiful Japanese Garden--BUT we're not allowed in. NO FAIR.

  11. That is amazing about the fishing with cormorants. I bet some of those fishermen get nasty pecks from time to time. If I were a cormorant (interesting concept, says Gail...), I would be none too keen on giving up my catch!

  23. We don't think we have sister cities. Having the one like we've got is bad enough, we'd feel sorry for others if they were like us! And anyway, we live out in the countryside so we don't think we can really comment to loudly! Love your stuff Sweet William!

  24. Sir William:
How nice of your city to have a sister city. I wonder if mine does?!? I will have to check that out. Now, for the bird spitting up its catch for the fisherman....sounds kinda gross to me but I guess, to eah their own.
