Then and Now

We have to turn in here.
Over this creek.
Over this narrow bridge.  I, Sweet William The Scot, prayed it would hold up!
Maybe we should have parked on the winding road and walked in.
Five Mile Chapel then and now.
I am here at the door, see me?
The foundation is limestone and the walls are constructed of imported sandstone according to the National Register.
Lee get a closer shot!
The property for the church and cemetery was donated by the son of an early settler John Markley in 1844.
Markley's grave which sits along side of the Chapel.
These stones are really really old.  Lee told me no potty here.
Different groups meet here like quilting groups, woodcarvers and local artist.
But what I, Sweet William The Scot, love is ice cream social.
Yep we love going to the old fashion ice cream social.  This year it will be September 11 from 1 to 4.  I saw Lee put it on our calendar this week.
You can book the chapel for a wedding.  Lee has attended several beautiful weddings here.
But I love the Ice Cream Social!
The Five Mile Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
It is also a United Methodist Historic Site.
Five Mile Chapel United Brethren in Christ AD 1844.
Back over the creek and we made it home.  This little chapel sits four miles from my home.

Thanks for being a friend
Traveling down the road and back again
Your heart is true and your a friend of mine

Another pretty street corner in Nati City.
Lee took the picture out the car window as we were waiting for the street light to change.

I am sure many of you from around the world have seen and read the story of the terrible killing of Harambe at the Cincinnati Zoo.  On May 28, 2016, Harambe, a 17-year-old, 440 lb. male critally endangered silverback gorilla, was fatally shot by zoo officials after a three-year-old boy climbed over a barrier through five feet of bushes and dropped down into a moat in Harambe's enclosure. The incident was recorded by a bystander and uploaded to You Tube, where the video went viral.

Lee saw this beautiful Silverback Gorilla right after he came to Nati City two years ago.  This exhibit opened in 1978 and not one incident has happened till last week.   Over 43 million people have safely enjoyed the exhibit the 38 years that it’s been open.

It took one parent who was not alert to her child and Harambe paid the price.
Signs in the city say
"Yes they bought a ticket"
"Harambe paid the Price"

Harambe is Swahili  meaning working together, pulling together, helping each other, caring, and sharing.
The Zoo had reach the halfway mark of its $12 million Gorilla World expansion fundraising in January.
Rest In Peace Harambe

  1. That's a beeYOUtiful chapel!

We're so sad about Harambe too. Momma is always super attentive to us whenever we're out somewhere that we might cause mischief. We just don't understand why a human's momma would be less careful.

SW, your visit to the church was very special and beautiful; thank you as always for telling us about it!

We too saw the news of Harambe and it is just devastating; firstly that a kid could slip through the fence like that (which is very surprising as every zoo I know has netting-style and it would be impossible); but secondly, that such drastic action was deemed necessary (and one couldn't help thinking that shooting Harambe was equally putting the kid in danger!). Heart-breaking all round.

Think on about ice creams SW; we need these things as balance in the world. See ya soon! Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  3. William I love that ice cream social event, how good that your Lee marked that day in her pawlendar! And I love such places with old cemeteries... the mama tries to read the names and the dates on the stones and we ponder about the people who found their place there.
We are very sorry for Harambe, that was such a shocking and sad news... and we are sorry for this boy... he is just 3 years old and still "famous" on social medias for such a sad case...:o(((

What a beautiful piece of history and architecture...and it does not hurt at all that it hosts a Ice Cream Social. Woof-hoo! Yes, we are very sorry to hear about Harambe. It makes us sad, the whole incident.

  9. my mom loves old churches, really she loves old buildings. She use to like taking photos of old barns. Once in she snuck up on top of the courthouse and took some cool shots of the old Grain Mill. Don't tell, it might get her fired and I'd have to sit on a corner with a sign will work for kibble. BOL

    Aroo to you,

    1. Oh have I got something to show you. In Kentucky they have a barn painting tour. Like 100 barns with quilt patterns painted on them. Lee said this summer we are going to take pictures of some of them.

  18. Oh,how I love to see your 'scotie tours'. It looks so different from where we are - that's the beauty of America! I love the cemetery and the church is spectacular! My mom says the #1 one thing she hates about teaching is the parents. It's sad really. Harambe deserved so much more than the headline he got. The parents my mom deals with never make themselves or their child responsible. We saw the story on the zoo, and thought such a horrible tragedy that should have never happened. We also feel so sad for the zoo. They lost a family member.

  25. Lemon Noosa ... That's a good one!! it's good to try them all, aye. Lee saw an UFO too??? Mum saw one once and nothing will convince her it wasn't real. She was on a deserted beach miles from nowhere and In Australia that's still possible. It was a bright blue light and it hovered around for about fifteen minutes. It was moving quite slowly and all of a sudden it took off really quickly. Darting all over the place and then it went in a straight line and disappeared. This was many years ago and Mum reckons she can still see it. Weird, aye?
