Road Trip

On the road again
Just can't wait to get on the road again
The life I love is being with my friends
And I can't wait to get on the road again.
Where are we going?  Up the Ohio River without a paddle.

Well I, Sweet William The Scot, am going to tell you so hold your horses and don't get your britches in a wad! Mount Pleasant, Ohio.
You ask what is in Mt. Pleasant?  Mount Pleasant, Ohio is where Ulysses S. Grant 18th President of the United States was born. Under Grant, the Union Army defeated the Confederate military and effectively ended the Civil War with the surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox.

.
The little home was lifted from its foundation and moved by boat to Cincinnati for public exhibition. From 1885 to 1896 the home was on the move across the state and the nation for expositions, state fairs, and other events. Between 1896 and 1936 it sat on the Ohio State Fairgrounds, sheltered in a limestone and glass pavilion. After 50 years on the road, in 1935, the Clermont County legislators and the Ohio Historical Society secured the passage of an act authorizing the Society to move the building back to its Point Pleasant original location. It was moved and dedicated in 1936.

Let me into this house!

Well I could not get in but, Flat George got the royal tour.

Boots at Flat George's feet were made by Ulysses Grant's father a tanner.

Everything in the home is original to the family and was there when Ulysses was born.

Look at all the campaign buttons from the wars General Grant gave his service.

Trunk Ulysses Grant took with him to West Point.  It was also made by his father, a tanner.  He packed light.

Jeeze Louise, I never got into the little frame home.
Have a Happy, Safe, Beautiful 4th of July.

Thanks for being a friend

  6. Hey Sweet William!
Wow, what a fun and educational place! My peeps love trips like that and maybe they'll visit there next time they go to Ohio. FG was the lucky one inside, but I bet there was a ton of fun stuff to snuffle around the grounds anyway. Thanks for taking us along with you and your pix are great!

  7. You could have used your time outside to dig. At that place, you probably could have found a zillion booze bottles.

  21. Yikes, the Olympic seating is already done and mama hasn't even taken our photos yet. Maybe we can sit behind you?

You go on the most wonderful tours, except when they won't let you inside. Bet doggies would do less damage inside those places than some of the little peeps.

Hope it's not as hot there as it is here. Actually, it looks on the weather this evening like you're fixing to get a big storm. Stay safe!

  26. We got this lovely e-mail today and we wanted to postthe e-mail
Our mom visited your blog today and was so happy to see those Ohio pictures! She grew up near Portsmouth on the Ohio River in a little spot called Franklin Furnace, but used to go to Cincinnati all the time to the zoo and Coney Island and to see the Reds play. It was a little touch of home although she hasn't lived there in over 40 years. We love reading your comments on the Scottie Chronicles. You look like a super fellow and are obviously better trained than we are. We like people, but are very stubborn little girls!
