Kentucky Derby and a Louisville Favorite

I, Sweet William The Scot, am going to tell you about a tradition around my part of the country.
It is a special sandwich!
A Hot Brown Sandwich, sometimes known as a Kentucky Hot Brown, is an American hot sandwich originally created at the Brown Hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, by Fred K. Schmidt in 1926.
The dish is a local specialty and favorite of the Louisville area particularly on Kentucky Derby Day.
You can look up the original authentic recipe here
http://www.brownhotel.com/dining-hot-brown
For your Derby Day Party here's an appetizer version of Kentucky Hot Brown Sandwich that we love to serve.  Lee is cooking!
1/4 cup chicken broth
3 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons flour
3/4 cup half & half
1 cup cheddar or Swiss or combo of both
18 slices snack rye bread or baguette slices
8 ounces sliced deli turkey
Thinly sliced sweet onion, separated into rings
6 strips cooked and crumbled bacon
Parsley
Preheat oven to 350. Melt butter over medium heat and stir in flour until smooth. Stir in cream and broth. Bring to boil and cook for a couple minutes or until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in cheese until melted. Put bread on baking sheets. Layer each piece with turkey, onion and cheese sauce. Sprinkle with bacon. Bake 10 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with parsley.
Yum Yum  serve with a Mint Julep and bon appetite.
Yes Lee has been to The Brown Hotel and had the sandwich.
The Kentucky Derby is regarded as the greatest two minutes in sports.
Will undefeated Nyquist, steal the show?
Three horses running were sired by Uncle Mo.
A little sibling rivalry.
Lee loves horses and she is kind of favoring Creator.
Creator breaking in the 3rd spot to close to the inside can get the horse in trouble.
Wasn't American Pharoah just a beautiful horse last year.
Hope your horse wins!

Well I hope that you have a payer at least - The Kentucky is a bit like the Melbourne Cup in OZ, or the Grand National in UK methinks; world-famous racing, everyone with their hats on!!! I might give the sandwich a miss - now if there was chargrilled peppers and eggplant and artichokes involved.... &*> Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

  9. mmm, sounds yummy! Someone is throwing Mum and the Fella a Kentucky Derby Couples Shower this Saturday. Mum was having a hard time narrowing down which horse she is going to pick...She thinks maybe she likes Whitmore...It would be the jockey's 3rd consecutive Derby win if he can do it! Me personally, wonders why such fuss over horses? Scotties are obviously far superior - though mum does love those horses!
