Well Crap On A Cracker

So far Lee has spent over $900 trying to figure out just what is causing my white perfectly round dime size dots.  Well we still don't know!!
Our vet said the biopsy report was far from conclusive. "That they left the barn door not only open but the back of the barn was gone". They failed to address why my skin has lost it pigment.  They said it was probably Alopecia Areata.  But the kicker is I have one spot on the pad of my foot where dogs have no fur cells.  I have fur just very fine white fur not like Scottie fur.

Lee talked to a Veterinary Nutritionists.
Veterinary nutritionists must first be accepted into an accredited veterinary college to complete their Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
After completing their DVM and becoming a licensed practitioner, a vet is able to begin the path to board certification in the specialty field of nutrition.
In order to be eligible to take the board certification exam in the specialty of nutrition, a veterinarian must fulfill all prerequisites. The candidate must have completed at least 3 years of training under the supervision of a board certified nutrition diplomate and submit three detailed case study reports for evaluation.
The 3 years of training must consist of at least 1 year of internship or clinical experience and 2 more years of residency (consisting of a combination of teaching, research, and clinical practice of veterinary nutrition).
After passing the comprehensive board certification exam administered by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition (ACVN), a veterinarian will be granted diplomate status in the specialty of nutrition. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association there were 71 ACVN diplomates in the 2014 veterinary specialty census.
Oh and they don't recommend the rotisserie chicken that we have found so many bloggers fond of.  They are filled with food additives substances added to food to preserve flavor or enhance its taste, appearance etc.

The Veterinary Nutritionists says for some dogs not enough copper and Vitamin D are in our foods.
Vitamin D comes from the sun but with a long haired dark black fur dog they get very little sunlight to the skin.  Since it is only fat soluble to much is dangerous. Copper is just something most of the industry does not think about as it comes from nuts, seeds, lentils, oysters.  These things help our skin pigment.
Importance of Copper. While too much copper is dangerous, your body needs this mineral to function. It aids in the production of myelin, collagen and melanin. Which I am not producing now.
So Lee is getting me a compounded pill just for my weight that has those two things.

So for now the best they can give us is that I have a shortage of these things and my immune system is attacking itself.

Lee is not putting me on Corticosteroids or Topical  Immunotherapy for now which has been a suggestion.

In our travels around we have seen some lovely window boxes.
Lee said you might enjoy seeing them instead of me.

I think Lee is very depressed.

Aw Wills, we would always rather see you... but there is no denying the beauty in those boxes!

What trial to have gone all through that, though, and still be none the wiser. I think the supplements route is a good one for now - - but I can quite understand that Lee may be at wit's end about it all... I guess the thing is to know that your general health is okay and that counts for a lot. Keep checking the beauty around and let Lee know you love her heaps... and will send some POTP you way, jus' cos' &*> Hugs and wags, YAM-aunty xxx

    1. Our flowers are really doing well again this year. Remember when you were here we showed you the painted ladies historic district homes ~ well Lee in working on Ancestry just found a census report from 1850 that showed her 2nd great-grandfather lived in one of those houses.

  2. Well Sweet William the window boxes are lovely, but you are too - whatever the colour of your skin. Oh but Gail and I so wish there was a simple explanation and treatment for your problem, but the body is a very complex affair, and sometimes even the experts do not have all the answers. (Better, we think, that an expert admits to not knowing than making out they do when they don't!) We are certainly not experts in this area, but tend to agree with YAM-aunty that the supplements route may be a good one to try.
We are very sorry to read that Lee is depressed, and can only suggest you both give each other lots of cuddles and take things one day at a time. Gail has long arms but she wishes they were longer so she could reach across the Pond and give you both a hug too.
You are often in our thoughts.

  5. Oh, dear. This is so perplexing, SWTS. I feel bad that even those with big-headed- knowledge are stumped.
Well, petcretary agrees to start with the more simple things like supplements to see if that might make improvements.

Those beautiful window boxes sure are cheerful. I hope your Lee finds some cheer in them too.

Sending big huge hug and some of my doggy MJF kisses too.

And thanks for your kind comments in our blog, regarding our Angel-Minko.

  6. So sorry that you did not find the answer to your problem. But I also feel that the supplements will help. I have been hoping that you would get an answer but sometimes no answer can be the answer that you need. As long as you are doing ok so what if you have spots. You are unique Scottie and We Love you. Love your window boxes, but also love to see you.
Hugs to you and your Lee.

    1. Hi Bentley ~ Everything's intentional. It's just filling in the dots. Lee says she might buy a black magic marker.

  9. The steps to get certified as a vet nut(ritionist) make my bird brain hurt. Wouldn't it be simpler to stay away from you neighbor who splashes bleach around on laundry day? No more white spots! We're on your side!

  10. Hello Wills,

Vets!!!!!!!! I prefer not to go. But on the good side of this at least it is not anything really really nasty. Hopefully over time you will improve on your new supplements. I certainly have found that a bit of smoked salmon helps me feel better. I am only allowed it as a treat but perhaps these supplements could be your little bit of salmon. On the bright side black & white is very elegant at least Chanel thought so & we know what a style setter she was in her time. Love your window boxes photos but photos of you and Lee are appreciated. Sorry to hear that Lee is depressed. You have to remember that you are her only family and she would be very concerned for you. You must do all you can to brighten her up. Now both of you remember how much the world loves you. I wish I could come over from the other side of the world and give you both some of my special healing powers. Hugs and cuddles to you both. SP

  12. I hope the immunotherapy is the solution... it is sad when dogtors have to try different therapies before they find the treatment what helps... that's like an odyssey... All paws are crossed for you William and a BIG hug to your Lee...

You are very lucky to be loved by Lee

  16. Hi there William and Lee, we were hoping to read that they found out what was causing the spots. So sorry to hear that is not the case. Did they definitely rule out vitiligo? The window boxes are very pretty! We hope that the two of you cheer each other up and remember there are many peeps that love you guys! Xo Jeanne, Chloe, Romeo and Juliet

    2. I think it is going okay but it is about Basset hounds. Can you believe it? I should be the main character By the way found her looking at Scottie Statues. I am a tad peeved. But you and she are both cancerians as is my dad. So we should be seeing some improvement in you soon we hope.

    3. Hi Pea ~ One of Lee's treasurers is a little Scottie, Fala, on a round wood base. Her Grandmother got it in Washington, DC when she was there representing some group right after FDR was President. So we all have birthdays in July. Prince George was born on July 22. July is filling up. Basset hounds well that should be a nose to the ground book being scent hounds.
